FRANK SAYS. . .
Posted on 04.08.06 by mtpwh @ 12:18:39

I had a company in LA manufacturing audio boards. Wally came to us, since Wally and I had worked together at United Recording, and he knew Bill Brandt, our chief engineer. He wanted to modify the monitor section of the board in Studio 4 from 16 track to 24 track. The studio was about a block south of his main place, which was at Selma and Cahuenga, as I recall. He was understandably spooky about our finishing the mods on time as the board that Frank. . . was building for him was rather late.

Wally had put a large plastic sign over the entrance: “FRANK SAYS” and then two or three dates after that. Bill and I told Wally we would have the mods in by the date he wanted. In return, I asked him for a box of the unique Big Band LPs that he had created at his own expense. Wally got the mods on time, I got the LPs. All three of us were happy with the results. For those that know about that time, they will know who Frank was. That was about 1972, as I remember.

Wally would regularly stutter, but when he really got down to business, the stutter disappeared. I remember meeting him shortly after he joined United. He was a neat guy, very intelligent, and not afraid to ask questions.

I think most people in the music business would agree that Wally Heider was a major influence in the history of recording on the west coast, and helped launch hundreds of careers in the music business, including my own.

This is a place where we can share our experiences with Wally, his friends and associates at Wally Heider Recording, the equipment, the remotes and anyone else who had contact with the man or his studios, whether as an employee or a client.

Due to an incredible number of bots, spammers and trollers (mostly from Russia*) that want to do nothing but attempt to post spam and make things difficult for me, I can't automatically authorize users right away any more, but I'm notified of new registrations immediately and can add legitimate posters. Once again, if you have a story or wish to leave a comment to a story, please register and post your story, but don't bother to register if you're not going to contribute . All articles are publicly viewable. Also photos of Wally are desperately needed. Anyone?

*I don't know why people waste their time doing this; they certainly waste my time.
