I had a company in LA manufacturing audio boards. Wally came to us, since Wally and I had worked together at United Recording, and he knew Bill Brandt, our chief engineer. He wanted to modify the monitor section of the board in Studio 4 from 16 track to 24 track. The studio was about a block south of his main place, which was at Selma and Cahuenga, as I recall. He was understandably spooky about our finishing the mods on time as the board that Frank. . . was building for him was rather late. Wally had put a large plastic sign over the entrance: “FRANK SAYS” and then two or three dates after that. Bill and I told Wally we would have the mods in by the date he wanted. In return, I asked him for a box of the unique Big Band LPs that he had created at his own expense. Wally got the mods on time, I got the LPs. All three of us were happy with the results. For those that know about that time, they will know who Frank was. That was about 1972, as I remember. Wally would regularly stutter, but when he really got down to business, the stutter disappeared. I remember meeting him shortly after he joined United. He was a neat guy, very intelligent, and not afraid to ask questions. Bob Bushnell Filed under: Firsthand Stories Comments: 5 Comments |
